The Daily News

Daily News is an American tabloid newspaper founded in 1919. It was the first successful tabloid in the United States and the first to reach a circulation of 2 million copies. Its lurid photographs, celebrity stories, and political scandals made it an important influence on the tabloid newspapers that followed.

The Daily News was originally published in a large art deco building on 42nd Street near Second Avenue, which became an official city and national landmark designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. It later moved to a new facility at 450 West 33rd Street (known as 5 Manhattan West) in 1995, but the old building is still known as the “News Building” and features a giant globe with weather instruments in its lobby. It was the model for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films, and it later served as the headquarters of the News’s former television subsidiary, WPIX-TV.

In addition to its flagship newspaper, the Daily News also publishes a variety of specialty newspapers covering specific interest groups and geographical areas, as well as the news and entertainment magazine, The Week. The Week’s twice-daily news digests are the antidote to news overload — distilled from dozens of world-class sources, each update provides clarity and perspective, so you can make up your own mind about what’s happening and why.
