Daily News

The Daily News, formerly the New York Daily News, is an American morning tabloid newspaper. Founded in 1919, it was the first successful tabloid in the United States, and at its peak circulation reached more than 2 million copies per day. The paper’s name was derived from the city it covered, and it became known for its sensational reporting of crime, scandal, and violence, as well as its lurid photographs and entertainment features. The Daily News lost its dominant position to the more-sensational rival, the New York Post, in the mid-20th century, but remained one of America’s top newspapers.

In the early 1920s, the Daily News pioneered photography and a number of other innovative journalism techniques. It was the first newspaper to use wirephotography, and its staff included many prominent photographers of the era. The paper was also a leader in political coverage, and it was an early user of the Associated Press. It covered political wrongdoing, such as the Teapot Dome Scandal, and social intrigue, such as Wallis Simpson’s romance with King Edward VIII that led to his abdication.

Its sports section was particularly strong, and its New York City exclusives were a source of great pride. The newspaper also featured a large, diverse selection of classified ads, comics, and other entertainment and culture sections. In addition, it offered intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, and political commentary.

The Yale Daily News Historical Archive contains digitized versions of the YDN from its inception in 1878 through 1996. The Archive is open to the public and searchable via a web interface. The Archive has been funded in part by a generous gift from an anonymous Yale College alumnus and is hosted by the Yale Library.
